Galileo’s sketches of the phases of the Earth’s moon from his 1610 treatise, ‘Sidereus Nuncius’, or ‘Sidereal Messenger’ in English, which means something like ‘Starry Messenger’.
These sketches were quite an affront to God at the time, showing a heavenly body to be just as rough and rocky as the Earth. At the time the motions of the planets, stars, and the moon were seen as divine.
